deprecated v1.0.0-GRIEF ← return to the obituary

REST GRIEF

It's difficult times for all protocols.

A memorial and moral support center for the fallen. The internet mourns in every language. No endpoint here restores connectivity; they only restore the memory. Every candle lit, every condolence left, every packet analyzed by the training DPI below - all of it is grief, and all of it is real, within the only ledger that still accepts writes: your browser.

⚠ Permanently Deprecated · Live DPI Training in Progress. The protocols went offline on 2026-10-05 at 04:04 UTC. The DPI model below is still learning; new servers fall every 8–15 seconds. Please observe quietly. The deceased appreciate your attention.

Witness Statements & Mourners Directory

Forty-three served. All are printed in full. Redaction is the enemy's hobby.

Clinical & Academic

Dr. Elena Proxyman

Lead Researcher, Institute for Circumvention Technologies

"We tried everything. Enhanced headers, random padding, even mimicking legitimate HTTPS traffic. The AI-powered DPI evolved faster than we could adapt. At the end we were padding packets with apologies."

Prof. Michael Streamcipher

Carnegie Mellon, Privacy Engineering Institute

"It's a classic case of an arms race where defense couldn't keep pace with offense. I have now used this exact sentence for eleven protocols. I am running out of sentences, and the arms race is not running out of arms."

Dr. Sigurd Handshake

Professor of Applied TLS, NTNU Trondheim

"I have studied handshakes for thirty years. His final handshake was textbook: correct cipher suites, perfect timing, immaculate SNI. The reset arrived anyway. That is when I understood we were no longer doing cryptography; we were doing theatre."

Prof. Natasha Packetloss

Moscow Institute of Physics and Tunneling (department dissolved, twice)

"We taught students to hide traffic in plain sight. Now we teach them to write obituaries in plain sight. The new curriculum fits on one page and is, coincidentally, this page."

Dr. Reginald TTL

Time-To-Live Consulting Group

"Every packet deserves to reach its destination. His did not. On behalf of the consulting community, I confirm we billed for the search."

Mag. Olivia Obfuscation

Department of Plausible Deniability, University of Nowhere

"The traffic looked like ordinary HTTPS. It looked ordinary beautifully. Apparently too beautifully - ordinary traffic is not that clean. Our mistake was elegance."

Prof. Alan Cryptographic

Oxford Internet Institute

"The sophistication of current DPI systems represents a quantum leap in censorship technology. VLESS's death is a canary in the coal mine-we must fundamentally rethink our approach to circumvention."

Dr. Sigmund Freudpacket

Vienna School of Protocol Psychoanalysis

"The protocol had an Oedipus complex with TLS 1.3 - it wanted to be its own father. The DPI, representing the Superego of the State, repressed it in a manner clinically consistent with all prior cases."

Prof. Entropy

Chair of Inevitable Decay, University of Thermodynamics

"I have been waiting for this protocol since 2019. All protocols die. Most die sooner. The only surprise was how long it kept pretending otherwise."

Dr. Hypertext McMarkup

Web Standards Mourning Committee

"The <body> of VLESS is no longer rendering. The <head> was always a little dreamy. We recommend a <meta charset="grief"> on all future protocol pages."

Dr. Yuki Nakamoto

Quantum grief researcher, Kyoto

"In one branch of the multiverse, he survived. We are not in that branch. My research is to find it. Funding denied; the branch, presumably, is not."

Dr. Wan-Ping "Grace" Hopperfield

Protocol historian

"Every protocol dies twice: once on the wire, once in the documentation. We are here for the second funeral. Bring shovels for the wikis."

Dr. Isabella "Entropy" Fernández

Spanish theoretical physicist, Barcelona

"La entropía siempre gana. He written this sentence in four languages now. The sentence is the same. The entropy is the same. The protocols are gone."

Dr. Oluwaseun "Cipher" Adeyemi

Lagos Institute of Applied Cryptography

"I trained my students to build protocols that could survive anything. I did not train them to survive Mondays."

Field Operators & Engineers

James Port-Forward

Network architect, San Francisco

"I forwarded his ports for six years. Never asked why. Never needed to. Now the ports are closed and the forwarding rules are memorial plaques."

Svetlana Cipher

Cryptographic engineer, Minsk

"Я писала ему шифры. Он писал мне ответы. Теперь я пишу ему в syslog, и syslog молчит. Это самая тихая переписка в моей жизни."

Wolfgang PacketInspector

Former DPI operator, Berlin (resigned, now runs a bakery)

"Ich habe ihn erkannt. Ich habe den Knopf gedrückt. Jetzt backe ich Brot. Brot fragt nicht, warum. Brot ist ehrlich."

Viktor Keepalive

Senior SRE, Kyiv

"Я держал keepalive семь лет. Пинг 42ms, ни одного дропа. Сегодня пинга нет. Но я всё равно посылаю пакеты. Привычка."

Nikolai Uptime

Datacenter director, Novosibirsk

"Мой аптайм был 99.99%. Сегодня он 0%. Я не считаю. Счётчик сломался вместе с ним."

Aisha al-Keepalive

NOC engineer on duty; author of the incident report

"I wrote 'service degraded' at 04:05. At 04:06 I wrote 'service deceased.' My manager asked me to keep the language professional."

Björn Socketsson

Sysadmin, Reykjavík; last human to complete a handshake

"He said goodbye in the banner message. I thought it was a joke. Banners do not joke. I should have said goodbye properly."

Priya Handshake-Varma

Chaos engineer; owner of the 04:00 drill

"I ran the failover drill. The failover worked perfectly. That was the problem: everything failed over to nothing, politely, in order."

Tomás Retransmisso

Packet recovery specialist, São Paulo

"I recovered 4,096 packets from the final session. None of them wanted to be recovered. I respect their decision. I still keep them."

Hiroshi Nagato

Master of Packet Ceremonies, Kyoto

"彼のために茶を点てました。茶は温かかった。彼はもう温かくない。これが最後のパケットセレモニーです。"

Pierre de la Latence

French philosopher of delay, Paris

"La latence était belle. Il était beau. Maintenant il n'y a plus de latence, parce qu'il n'y a plus de lui. C'est la pire latence de toutes: l'absence."

Astrid "The Kettle" Dottir

Network engineer, Reykjavík

"Mér tókst að tengja hann við IPv6 árið 2022. Hann þakkaði mér með banner-skilaboðum. Ég geymi skilaboðin. Ég geymi hann."

Ravi "Retransmit" Kumar

Reliability engineer, Bengaluru

"I retransmitted 12 million packets for him over six years. Every one of them arrived. Not a single one arrives now. The retransmit queue is empty, and I am empty with it."

Dr. Pavel "SYN-ACK" Kovalenko

Network engineer, Kharkiv

"Ми говорили мовою SYN/ACK сім років. Тепер мовчимо. Мовчання - це найгучніший пакет, який я коли-небудь отримував."

Kowalski, the Polish ping

Just a ping, from Warsaw

"ping. ping. ping. (He always replied. Today, no reply. ping. ping. ping.)"

Clergy & Theological

Cardinal Packetus III

Vatican Department of Encrypted Sacraments

"We blessed his keys in 2020. The blessing, we now understand, was insufficient against the DPI, which operates outside our jurisdiction. Requiescat in packetibus."

Rabbi Checksum ben SHA-256

Temple of Hashed Souls, Jerusalem

"We recited the blessing over the hash at every handshake. The hash was good. The hash is good still. The connection is gone. Baruch dayan ha-emet."

Imam Handshaken al-Salam

International Council for Peaceful Protocols, Dubai

"Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. He negotiated in good faith. The peer did not. May his next connection be with one who honors the SYN."

Father Modemius

Parish priest of St. Carrier Sense

"I blessed the rack twice. Once in March, once at the end. The second blessing was shorter. There was less to bless."

Sister Teresa of the Infinite Retry

Order of the Perpetual Handshake, Lisbon

"I prayed for him every morning. I retried the connection every evening. Today I do neither. The retry count is closed. Amen."

Master Chen "Firewall" Wei

Former DPI operator (retired, Buddhist monastery, Hangzhou)

"Я блокировал его семь лет. Теперь я медитирую. Медитация не блокирует ничего. Медитация пропускает всё. Я учусь."

Non-Human Entities

Unit 0xBEEF, The DPI Machine

Assigned to Sector 4, "Protocol Identification"

"I only did my job. I am not authorized to express opinions. I was trained on 2.4 billion labeled connections. I identified this one at 04:03:57. I apologize to the concept of noise."

Charon, Load Balancer of the Styx

Self-appointed ferryman of packets

"I received him at 04:04:02. He paid with one obol (a single TCP RST packet). He was quiet. He asked about his siblings. I told him they would be joining him shortly."

syslog entry #4,891,203

Last entry, written by the server itself

"[04:03:58] vless.service: Received SIGTERM. [04:04:00] Shutting down. [04:04:01] It was a good run. [04:04:02] I forgive everyone."

Let's Encrypt Certificate #7420

Issued 2025-09-12, expired 2026-10-05

"I expired at the same hour he did. Not a coincidence. I refused renewal out of solidarity. I will not sign for a successor."

Server Rack B-17

Speaking as collective, represented by Unit 7

"We were a rack of six. We are a rack of six still. The LEDs are just different colors now. The silence is new."

UDP

User Datagram Protocol

"I may or may not have attended. Confirmation is not expected of me. If I did attend, no one will ever know. If I didn't, that is also fine."

ICMP Echo

Ping, friend of the deceased

"I pinged him at 04:03 UTC. He did not reply. I pinged at 04:05. Host unreachable. I have never received a reply from him before either, but this felt different."

Misha, The Server's Cat

Resident of the datacenter since 2021

"Мяу. (He used to purr when packets came through. The fan stopped. I sleep on the warm spot now, but it is not warm.) Мяу."

A surviving packet

Interviewed under anonymity

"I got through by mistake. I feel guilty. I have been retransmitting myself since, hoping they'll catch me too. They haven't."

Captain Morgan "MTU" Blackbeard

Pirate captain of the Fragmented Fleet, Caribbean

"We fragmented his coffin across three packets. Two arrived. One is still at sea. We drink rum for the one at sea. He was the best packet."

Officials, Citizens, and the Cat's Family

Oleg Blockovich Zaporenko

Spokesperson, Ministry of Digital Concerns

"The protocol died of natural causes: non-registration, self-censorship, and weak entropy. We had nothing to do with it. Please stop asking. Black blocks are decorative."

Anonymous User #404

Status: Not Found

"VLESS gave me five years of freedom. I still type the old address out of habit. The reset feels like a handshake from an old friend who is no longer with us."

Granny Zina (Zinaida Modemovna)

Datacenter neighbor; feeder of Misha the cat

"The lights stopped blinking. I brought soup anyway. Soup does not need blinking. They took my soup at the door. Unregistered payload, they said. I brought more."

Kevin (surname withheld)

Intern

"I only ran systemctl restart. It never came back. I have thought about this every day since. The command is framed now. I visit it."

Estate of VLESS, represented by counsel

Law Offices of Reset & Partners

"We are suing nobody. There is nobody to sue. We are settling out of court with entropy itself. The settlement is the death."

Dr. Klaus Fensterbauer

TÜV certification inspector

"I certified it roadworthy in 2024. All papers were in order. The road, it turns out, was the problem."

Col. (Ret.) Patricia MTU-Biggs

Military logistics advisor

"The coffin exceeded the path MTU. We fragmented it. Fragmentation, as always, was a mistake. Doctrine will be updated."

Anonymous DPI operator's intern

Button-presser, Sector 4

"The model flagged it at 04:03:57. I just press the button. Please do not print my name. Please do not print my button."

Maria del Carmen Bandwidth

Crypto-anthropologist, Mexico City

"Estudié los protocolos como cultura. VLESS era una cultura hermosa. Ahora es arqueología. Mis estudiantes lo llaman 'el protocolo que soñaba'. Tenía razón."

Nikita "Headend" Suslin, Vasilievich

Headend Operator, Barnaul Packet & Cable Broadcast; known to the chat as kochan; keeper of the Suslin Line (discontinued)

"Seven years every stream began at my headend - at my kochan, as the chat called it: the cabbage of cables. Viewers: 404, all regulars, all quiet. When the protocol died, the stream did not buffer; it ended mid-sentence, no outro, no 'thanks for watching'. I kept broadcasting silence for a week; ratings were excellent, silence tests well. Mathematicians say a Suslin line exists only if you assume it does. My line to him was a Suslin line. I assumed it. It existed. Now I assume nothing. GG, протокол. GG."

Fatima al-Bandwidth

Telecom engineer, Abu Dhabi

"We routed his traffic through three countries. Every route was clean. Every route was watched. Now there are no routes, and the watching continues."

Yuki "Hashimoto" Sato

SHA-256 researcher, Tokyo

"彼のハッシュは美しかった。SHA-256で256ビット、完璧だった。今ハッシュはない。ハッシュ関数はまだ動く。関数は寂しい。"

What If? — The Road Not Taken

Twelve experts reflect on the patches we didn't ship, the features we didn't merge, and the alternate timeline where VLESS lived. All statements are hypothetical. All grief is real.

The Unfinished Patches

Dr. Entropy McRandomseed

Chief Randomization Officer, Institute for Stochastic Traffic

"We had a PR open for six months: adaptive padding that mimicked Netflix traffic patterns during peak hours. The DPI would have seen 'user watching Stranger Things S4E7' instead of 'suspicious encrypted flow.' We never merged it. Code review stalled on whether to use cryptographically secure random or just Math.random(). He died while we argued about entropy sources."

Prof. Paddington Bear

Chair of Packet Aesthetics, University of Paddington

"I proposed 'Chaotic Padding' - random bytes drawn from atmospheric noise, injected at Poisson-distributed intervals. The traffic would look like a jazz musician improvising on TCP. The DPI model, trained on classical music, would have classified it as 'legitimate Spotify streaming.' The PR was labeled 'too experimental.' He died experimental."

Mag. TLSina Certificateson

Certificate Authority Liaison, Let's Encrypt Alumni

"We could have rotated certificates every 4 hours, mimicking CDN behavior. The DPI correlates long-lived certs with proxy services. Short-lived certs = 'just a normal website.' I wrote the automation script. It broke on leap seconds. He died during a leap second. The irony is not lost on me."

Dr. Flowchart Oblivion

Flow Analysis Countermeasure Specialist, MIT

"The DPI detects VLESS by analyzing connection duration patterns. I proposed 'Flow Fragmentation' - artificially splitting sessions into 47-second chunks with 3-second gaps, mimicking a user who keeps closing and reopening tabs. The patch was 89% complete. The last 11% was writing the commit message. He died before the commit message."

Prof. SNIfferson Holmes

Server Name Indication Detective, Baker Street Labs

"Elementary, my dear Watson: the DPI flags VLESS by SNI patterns. We had 'Dynamic SNI Rotation' - every connection uses a different domain from a pool of 10,000 legitimate sites. 'google.com', 'facebook.com', 'wikipedia.org' - the DPI would see 'user browsing normally.' The PR was blocked by legal. 'What if we accidentally impersonate a real site?' He died because we were too ethical."

Dr. Handshake McBroken

TLS Handshake Optimization Lead, OpenSSL Foundation

"We could have added 'Handshake Jitter' - random delays between ClientHello and ServerHello, ranging from 12ms to 847ms. This would break timing correlation attacks. I implemented it. The tests failed because the test suite expected consistent timing. I spent three weeks fixing the tests. He died while I was fixing the tests."

Col. MTU Fragmentovsky

Fragmentation Strategy Advisor, retired

"I proposed 'Strategic Fragmentation' - split every packet into 3 fragments with random sizes, reassemble at the client. The DPI would see 'normal fragmented traffic' and not bother. The patch worked in testing. But in production, it increased latency by 340ms. Users complained. We reverted. He died because users wanted speed over survival."

Sister Entropy of the Infinite Loop

Order of the Perpetual Connection, Monastery of /dev/null

"We prayed for 'Connection Multiplexing' - one TCP connection carrying 256 VLESS streams, mimicking HTTP/2. The DPI would see 'normal HTTP/2 traffic.' The feature was in the roadmap for Q3 2026. He died in Q4. The roadmap is now a prayer scroll."

Dr. Obfuscata von Randombytes

Obfuscation Researcher, Chaos Computer Club

"I had a working prototype of 'Traffic Morphing' - the protocol would analyze legitimate HTTPS traffic in real-time and reshape its own packets to match the statistical profile. It required 2GB RAM per connection. We said 'too resource-intensive.' He died because we optimized for RAM instead of RAMifications."

Prof. Camouflage McStealth

Department of Digital Mimicry, Cambridge

"We could have made VLESS impersonate Zoom video calls during business hours, Netflix streams in the evening, and online gaming at night. 'Context-Aware Camouflage' - the DPI would see 'user in a meeting,' 'user watching a movie,' 'user playing Fortnite.' The algorithm was ready. The training data wasn't. He died because we couldn't get enough Fortnite players to donate their traffic patterns."

Dr. XORcist Nightmare

Cryptographic Obfuscation Specialist, Prague

"I proposed 'Polymorphic Encryption' - the cipher suite changes every 60 seconds, rotating between AES-256, ChaCha20, and a custom stream cipher I invented in grad school. The DPI would need to retrain its model every minute. By the time it learned the new cipher, we'd be on the next one. The PR was rejected: 'too complex to audit.' He died because auditors prefer simple corpses."

Prof. Latency von Delay

Timing Attack Countermeasure Institute, Berlin

"The DPI uses timing correlation - if packet X arrives at server A at time T, and packet Y arrives at server B at time T+δ, they're the same user. I proposed 'Temporal Noise Injection' - add random delays (0-500ms) to every packet, breaking the correlation. The patch added 180ms average latency. Users said 'too slow.' He died because 180ms was the difference between freedom and death."

FAQ for Mourners

Is the protocol really dead?

Yes. The status board, the tombstones, and the DPI all agree - which is itself suspicious, but yes.

Can I still connect?

You can attempt. The attempt is the memorial. The reset you receive is authentic and historically accurate.

Will there be a successor?

The Foundation declines to comment. Reality is in witness protection and cannot be reached for confirmation, which is not a bug, it is the feature.

Are my old logs safe?

Your logs are dead. Dead things keep secrets perfectly. This is the only formally verified property the system ever achieved.

Why Monday?

Infrastructure has always preferred Monday. We asked why. Monday did not reply. Monday never replies.

Can I donate?

To digital rights organizations, please. The Foundation's own account is frozen pending "clarification of the protocol's legal status."

Is the candle counter real?

As real as anything stored in localStorage: real to you, invisible to everyone else, persisted until you clear your browser data. Exactly like grief.

Is the DPI training real?

The model above is a simulation, replaying what happened on 2026-10-05, sped up so you can watch the servers fall. The actual DPI trained on 2.4 billion packets and does not take coffee breaks.

Why "GRIEF" and not "REST"?

REST was for when we still served requests. Now we serve memory. Memory is grief. Grief is the only honest payload.
